Why *shock/horror* did I hold on to all that goshdarned CRUFT? I mean SURE, I have a fair amount of time on hand to web it, but WHEN did I think I was ever going to get back to all those half-baked projects and while-away-the-time flitting half-felt wants and desires for this and that and other such new hobby?!?!

HUH. I guess it was a form of procrastination slash packratting slash web momento accumulation.

In any case it was very defocused and made it impossible to FIND anything useful in my forest of links. I almost needed a digital Park Ranger Service to prune my XML forest of links…. Yikes.

If you have any funny revelations… LONG overdue… Realize them and move on. But do, let yourself off the Proverbial Hook, and find something more exciting to do.

I was browsing through some of the chatter regarding rockbox and the effort to get rockbox up and running on Android in the form “rockboxAsAnApplication.apk” or whatever its called atm…

That’s what I’ve labeled the snapshot I’ve put up on MediaFire:  here

Additionally I’ve made available all the pre-set Equalizers from the BioEQ.rockbox effort to be MANUALLY copied into the file system structure on your Android Phone’s file system. Hey, I’ll walk you through it. Here are the files: Here

OK so getting this build of rockboxAsAnApplication.apk and then sideloading the EqualizerPresets into its filesystem is ACTUALLY very easy to do.

1. You need to download the two archives provided in the above segment of this article to your local computer, probably on your Desktop or somewhere you like to work from. I’ll assume you’re putting them in : C:\Desktop\rockbox\ for an example. Just change that to where you really put your files.

2. So now you have an archive located at “C:\Desktop\rockbox\rockboxAsAnApplication.apk”

and “C:\Desktop\rockbox\eqs.zip”

3. You need to inflate or unzip the “eqs.zip” folder. Use 7-Zip-FM.exe or UNRAR.exe or WinZip.exe for that task for example

4. You now need to connect your Galaxy S Phone to the Windows Computer you are using, via the USB cable. The phone must be in “Mass Storage” Or “Ask On Connection” mode so that AutoRun will allow Windows to spawn a Windows Explorer File Manager window when the Phone connects and you can navigate to the internal memory locations on it.

5. First, If you ever do any kind of fooling around or upgrading of your phone with root access programs to “upgrade” it, it’s nice to have a standard location to store programs. I like to call mine “UPDATE_HEAVEN” its just a catchbin directory for any of the “unique” things I may install onto my phone, and it stores them there so I never have to remember which computer or laptop I was using when updating my phone. Its all there locally.

6. Enough of lecturing you on habits. I would, in my case, put the .apk file rockboxAsAnApplication.apk in the “UPDATE_HEAVEN” directory and disconnect the phone.

7. Why didn’t I do anything with the eqs.zip files yet? I want to install the .apk first and let its default folders install first.

8. When the Galaxy S is unplugged safely from the computer, go ahead and with the Files app, navigate to the UPDATE_HEAVEN directory storing the rockboxAsAnApplication.apk file. tap on the .apk to install it in your Android system.

9. In the root of your Android system will now be a folder named /android/ which is what we wanted to have created before doing anything with those eqs files. Now it is time to remount the Galaxy S phone to the Windows PC.

10. once remounted, and the internal memory is exposed via Windows Explorer, the file manager, you can then copy the “eqs” folder into the /rockbox/folder so it becomes the /rockbox/eqs/ folder. That will allow the rockboxAsAnApplication firmware to find the EQ Presets .cfg files that run on the rockbox firmware on ANY of the rockbox firmware targets. Don’t you love clean modularity!? I do, cuz it means I just had to load what I already built up, a collection of widely varied and nuanced EQ preset profiles into a central directory, for a totally new device to take advantage of. No fooling around.

11. OK, now you can disconnect safely from windows, and go about setting up your sound and playback settings to taste. I’ll take you on a tour of what have become known as the BioEQ.rockbox set-up. I just took a slew of screencaps from inside the Galaxy S while setting it up appropriately to showcase the proper settings.

I’ve acquired a pair of Audio-Technica EARSUIT ATH-ESW9A’s recently, and I look forward to adding more about them in this space.

Here’s some info. The manufacturer is Audio-Technica. Part of the portable EARSUIT series, of which they have a metal cup line and a wood cup line, this would be the latter wood-cupped line, specifically the “A” series uses African Padauk wood.

Despite all that; I can’t leave well enough alone though, so I’m having the nice master craftsman by the name of Austin,  at Zombie-X Ametuer Cables,  re-cable mine for me. He’ll be using some high end copper cable, Quables Y-Splitter, a Swiftcraft Right Angle Plug, 3.5mm variety minijack, and covered in some nice Nylone Multifiliment Jacketing. It’s going to not only look as good as it sounds, its going to sound better than stock!
