Cloned my Gentoo .:{whimsy}:. 4.0 system from the Western Digital Raptor 150 GB drive to a new Western Digital VelociRaptor 300 GB 10,000 rpm drive which has twice the bandwidth of the old Raptor. Long live .:{empathy}:. 1.0
The /home drive is still the same Hitachi Deskstar 7100K 1TB 7200 rpm affair.
The old graphics adaptor, an ATi All-In-Wonder X1900XT was sold, and replaced with a SAPPHIRE ATi RADEON HD 4850 1GB GDDR-3 board.
Audio is sweet: AuzenTech X-Meridain with an X-Tension DIN Daughtercard. Analog Devices OP-AMPS will make it sound lovely!! (not that it doesn’t best any of my other devices anyway).
It’s hooked up to a Logitech Classic Keyboard (what!?!?) Yeah, I like those simple.
Also just have a Logitech V220 Laser Mouse. I hated my MX-Revolution. It’s a piece of sh*t if you ask me. Let me clarify. _I_ found _MYSELF_ incapable of getting the scroll wheel to act as a middle mouse button even with the help of revoco or btnx. I still need to get a graphics tablet…
And the display is a Syntax Olevia LT27HV 720p HDTV having it’s DVI-I input port utilized by my Linux box. It’s cool to have the whole home theater hub thing going, but its a b!tch to set up X.
It should be replaced with a Wacom Cintiq don’tcha think? I’d love to.
It uses a Plextor PX-755SA SATA DVD-RW Drive
It’s hooked up to an EPSON Perfection V750M Scanner
It was hooked up to an HP B9180 but after the fourth one broke for no good reason, I made them give me a refund. I’m looking into purchasing an EPSON 3800 since I do so much cut sheet work rather than a 4880 since I would be less likely to do roll work.
that’s my new system in a nutshell.
On the Linux Side of things, it runs Gentoo Linux 2008.0-r1 “It’s Got What Plant’s Crave” for it’s distribution, with Baselayout 2 & OpenRC. It has 14 partitions in its filesystem for Very Good Reasons tm. Performance and maximum headroom for the JAVA VM since I use Light Zone quite Heavily, beyond its specs, but hey, it WORKS, and doesn’t hiccup with 35 megapixel files, so who’s to complain. Not me.
Graphics Stuff:
Light Crafts’ LightZone is INDISPENSABLE for a Zone System Photographer like Yours Truly. It can do some real sweet tricks!
Ed Hamrick’s VueScan is a very VERY WELL DESIGNED scanning package that even utilizes the Infrared Clean) aka “Digital ICE” in some of your more high-end scanners.
ZEDOnet’s TurboPrint Studio for Linux Drivers allow all the latest and greatest the Fine Art Printing world has to offer, with QUALITY ppd’s that have to be bought to be believed.
Try them risk free to see if they work on your distribution. Same for LightZone and VueScan. Unofficial ebuilds ARE avialable for Gentoo. If you can’t find them on Gentoo’s Bugzilla, leave a comment.
Also of interest is Bibble 5 which is due out soonishly. My DSLR purchase got pushed out, so its rentals for a bit longer, and digiKam and ShowFoto in the interim, but Bibble and its PLETHORA of Plugins are stellar. I’ve just been waiting for the new interface to come out, personally. And I very much like what I see on the teaser sites.
Well, I think that’s a rap…
Best In Any Manner Of Things…
