Breathing Color

Breathing Color, and specifically, a Materials Specialist by the name of Brian in the California offices have sparked a renewed interest and salvaged one dying ember of a traditional wet darkroom photographer; and have transformed him onto a “LightRoom” Photographic Printmaker who now enjoys his HP PhotoSmart Pro B9180 Printer, his LightZone and various other 16 bit programs on Linux, and a lush new canvas of papers and well, really, CANVAS (the real deal) to print on!

BREATHING COLOR

Makes the most advanced Inkjet papers in the world, and I’m cutting you in on a secret when I tell you about this. It’s not one I part with easily, however I wish everybody THE BEST in Any Manner Of Things… and Photographic Reproduction is one of them.

I’ve had fun with Strathmore Bristol Papers, Canson Canva-Paper, Canson Canvas for Painting, Newson-Cottman Cotton Painting Board, HP Advanced Photo Paper, some watermarked Business Resume Paper, most recently some Gartner Studios Fine Linen White Resume Paper…

…NONE.

HOLD A CANDLE…

…to Breathing Color.

In terms of Vibrance, Saturation, Gamut, Clarity, or Sharpness…

I’ve tried the Photo Papers too… Even some of the Fine Art ones that I won’t mention. Not because they made bad prints, just because while they were good enough papers I don’t want to call them out and hurt their business or feelings. That’s not my way of dharma or karma. It’s not my way of doing things. It interferes with the bountiful lovingkindness I try to resonate with.

That said.

They’re unique at Breathing Color.

They print because they’re artists. They make paper because they’re artists. They love art and photography, and want to advance digital printmaking. They literally Breathe Color. It’s oozing from their pores. It’ll ooze from your printer onto their papers and off of their papers through the light that carries it from their papers into your eyeballs. If that doesn’t say how I feel about their quality of product, I’ll turn to their quality of service…

I haven’t even had the need to talk to my account rep yet. Not through any failing in their part. NO no no… Their support at the technical and reception level, and the fact that they’ve employed capable folks with art in their hearts, skill in their hands, and genuine customer service skills and a head for business means I have been JUST FINE talking to the support staff without having to make any special requests or have anything explained in detail the support staff was incapable of handling.

And me? I’ve been a die-hard Medium-Format Photographer ever since inheriting Granpa’s Mamiya 645J in 1994. I use Prime Lenses. I use slow film. I get scans of darkroom prints. Now I’m getting some of my negatives scanned at high dpi, high bit depth, and am printing at high quality. My prints on Breathing Color stock with the B9180 piped through the TurboPrint Studio for Linux Drivers and manipulated in LightZone on Linux are at or superior to what I’ve produced from medium format, and that’s even with consumer point and shoot digicam at 8 MegaPixels… YUM.

Now, I have to get some model releases and whatnot before I can SHOW YOU some of this work for your eyes, BUT I hope to, and I hope it impresses you. If it does, or if this page has made any impression or piqued any curiosity call or fire up your browser. If you’re not in the USA, there are satellite sites in the UK and Australia, as far as I know and I’m sure they’ll ship to you… …wherever you happen to be.

I write this page as one friendly photographer to another in the hopes that you find it useful…

Best, in Any Manner Of Things…
